John narrated “Winter is a magical time, with cold,
crisp mornings and chilly starlit evenings a lingering season.
It is a time to gather golden moments, embark upon a sentimental journey,
and enjoy every idle hour. It brings the magic of snowfall, and the opportunity
to engage in various winter sports. The essence of winter's festivities is
enhanced by Christmas as well.”


Winter's icy grip can tighten, transforming once-vibrant landscapes
into frosted wonderlands. Though the season's beauty is undeniable,
the plummeting temperatures and harsh elements pose unique challenges to our health
and well-being.

But fear not, fellow foggy snow warriors! With little preparation and know-how,
we can transform from shivering shadows to confident winter conquerors.


Essence of Winter:

During winter, the chilly mornings give us a different sense. Hot drinks like coffee, tea, and hot chocolate are enjoyed more. The sun rises quite late and sometimes it does not. Most deciduous trees have lost their leaves, Grassy lawns also stopped growing, Birds are on the move, and Animals are migrating to warmer lands This season brings a lot of healthy fruits and vegetables. People get the chance to eat fresh grapes, apples, carrots, cauliflower, guava and more. Furthermore, so many beautiful flowers bloom enriched with dew that look more beautiful than in other seasons. Even when it does, most people prefer to remain inside, sitting by the fireplace or heater all day. In the hilly areas and western regions, people experience snow and icefalls. But, there is also a downside to this season. The aged and kids, farmers, and homeless people are most affected by this season. There is hardly any business in this season for farmers. Hundreds of homeless people die due to the harsh winters. In addition, many transportation schedules are also cancelled due to rough weather.


Dress in layers appropriately to Stay Warm:


The key to staying warm in winter is proper clothing. Dressing in layers helps trap and retain body heat, providing insulation against the cold. Start with a moisture-wicking base layer to keep sweat away from your skin. Add an insulating layer for warmth and a waterproof outer layer to shield

against wind and precipitation. Don't forget accessories like hats, gloves, and scarves to protect exposed areas. Water-resistant outerwear can help repel rain, snow, and ice.


Keep your home warm for comfort:

Staying inside is no guarantee of safety. Try and block any areas in your home that are particularly drafty, including around window frames, keyholes and under doors. Be clever with heating. Keep your curtains open during the day to let light and warmth in, and draw them before it gets dark to avoid losing heat. Drink the required amount of water every day and stay hydrated. Water helps to clean our system and remove toxins, carry nutrients to the body cells and help balance body fluid.


Fine-tune diet to boost Immune System:


Eat for warmth, and eat for immunity. Adding extra healthy fats, such as olive oil, coconut oil,

and nut and seed butter, to your daily meal plan can help stoke your metabolic fires,

which helps heat the body.


Keep eating your healthy salad at lunch when your body is warm,

but make the evening meal something warm to help keep your body warm through the night.

Ginger is great for warming,

and it nourishes the immune and digestive systems. Get creative with seasonal anti-inflammatory

and antioxidant-rich foods. Beets, pumpkins, winter squash, and sweet potatoes boost your

immune system and help protect you from viruses. 


A hot breakfast built around rolled oats, millet, and other whole grains provides immediate

warmth and plentiful complex carbohydrates to fuel the body for the day.

Grains are rich in B vitamins and magnesium, which help the thyroid and

adrenal glands regulate body temperature. 


Ensure organic foods inexpensive to make or buy that are enriched with Zinc, Vitamin C,

Vitamin D mainly by getting sunlight, and  Vitamin E.


Listen to body surface and take extra care: 


Taking care of your skin is integral to preparing for winter. With the first cool breeze,

you will notice dry and patchy skin. Winter is the time to show your skin some love,

so keep moisturizing it. Switch to thicker moisturizers and avoid hot, long showers

as they can strip your skin of essential nutrients. 

Regularly apply a good-quality moisturizer to keep the surface hydrated.

Pay extra attention to areas that are prone to dryness, such as hands, elbows, and knees.

Use a lip balm to prevent chapped lips, and consider using a humidifier indoors to

add moisture to the air. Wet and cold extremities are not only uncomfortable

but can also lead to serious health issues like frostbite.


Don't push yourself too hard, especially during strenuous activities like shovelling snow.

Take breaks, warm up with hot drinks, and listen to the body's signals. Hypothermia is a

real threat, so don't ignore chills, shivering, or confusion. We might not be able to see the sun,

but it’s still there so wear SPF during the day to protect our skin from UV exposure.


Get moving to improve seasonal ailments:


Shorter days and colder weather can translate to less exercise. Keep as active as possible to boost your circulation. Move around at least once an hour and avoid sitting still for long periods. Get at least 150 minutes of moderate exercise weekly. When sitting down, put your feet up as it's the coldest near the ground. The daily routine of yoga or any form of physical activity will help to keep you warm and boost the immune system improving defense against seasonal ailments like flu and colds.


Emergency Preparedness: 


Winter storms can be unpredictable, so be ready for the unexpected. Stock up on

non-perishable food, bottled water, and essential supplies like batteries, candles, and

a first-aid kit. Having a charged phone and portable power bank is crucial for staying connected.


Follow a Sleep Routine:


Sleep, a non-negotiable factor for maintaining good health, can have severe effects on

our immune system. Ensure to get enough sleep for 8 hours in winter. Also, do a daily routine

to wake up and follow every day. This is important because we may become lazy during the

winter and wake up late. Wake them up in the morning and take them to the park

to jog or warm up.



Prevent Seasonal Illnesses:

The winter season is notorious for illnesses like the flu and the common cold. Boost your immune system by getting a flu shot, washing your hands regularly, and avoiding close contact with sick individuals. Practice good respiratory hygiene by covering your mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing.



Practice Safe Driving: Get your vehicle ready for cold weather use before winter arrives. Service the radiator and maintain the antifreeze level. Check your tires’ tread or, if necessary, replace tires with all-weather or snow tires. Drive at a slower speed, maintain a safe following distance, and avoid unnecessary risks. Keep the gas tank full to avoid ice in the tank and fuel lines. Use a wintertime formula in your windshield washer. Prepare a winter emergency kit to keep in your car in case you become stranded. The kit should include a cell phone, a portable charger, and extra batteries. Items to stay warm, such as extra hats, coats, mittens, blankets, or sleeping bags. Food and water. Booster cables, flares, tire pump, and a bag of sand or cat litter (for traction). Compass and maps. Flashlight, battery-powered radio, and extra batteries. First-aid kit; and Plastic bags (for sanitation).

Don't forget the power of community! Check on elderly neighbours, share resources, and lend a helping hand whenever possible. Winter is a time for togetherness, and by looking out for each other, we can make it a season of warmth, both inside and out.
